I treat a lot of sexually addicted physicians. Physicians are put in a position of “God” and sometimes when they go back to their “real” life it doesn’t feel as good. If there is a propensity for addiction, the setting is prime.
I help physicians see that there are so many other physician addicts and they are not alone. They have a lot of stress at work and also get a lot of people working around them treating them not “human-like”.
There is a lot of community support for physician addicts and it is possible to recover from sex addiction. It takes a lot of courage to reach out for help because physicians are not “supposed” to need help. The implications of a physician sex addict are huge and are usually bigger in the physicians thoughts than in reality. If the addiction goes untreated, a lot is at stake for them, their patients and of course their families.
As a certified sex addiction therapist, I help people understand addiction as a disease rather than a moral issue. I help the addict see that they didn’t choose to become an addict, that addiction is like any other disease. I educate about sex addiction and multiple addictions. I treat both the addicted and the spouses, families and friends of the addicted, and treat both from a place of complete empathy, compassion and non-judgement.
